Parameters of Freedom – Memorial Minas Gerais Vale

Lella Castello Branco is a Brazilian artist based in London since 1988. Her work evokes a contemplative perspective of the world, inspired by nature, geometry, the sublime and vast spaces. Her artistic vision circulates comfortably between the classical sculpture and more contemporary and free visions of art.
For this show at Vale Museum (MMGV), in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Lella created a video installation, INVISIBLE CHAINS, which contains a strong message relating to the perception of freedom, inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau famous sentence, “Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains”.
Parameters of Freedom spreads throughout the architectural space of the 19th Century building, today the Vale Museum, MMGV, starting in the ground floor, where a bronze sculpture, DAWN, can be seen in the garden.
In the third floor the artist occupies a room with sculptures in bronze, aluminum and corten steel, installed on plinths painted nordic grey and magenta, reminding the fact that the millenary greek sculptures were originally polychromatic.
The next room houses the site-specific installation DO I REALLY WANT TO GET UP? A male and female nude appear to be peacefully reclining, but on close inspection are fused and locked in permanent position, mirrored walls also suggest ad infinitum – be it by choice, lethargy or conformity. This installation is a reflection of the dynamics of life – action, inaction and indecision.
Parameters of Freedom is an insightful exhibition that challenges one’s choices and loyalties, inducing to meditation and contemplation. It’s challenging and controversial, exploring and questioning independent and collective choices within society.
