CCJF is pleased to present new sculptural works and site-specific installations by Lella Castello-Branco, a London based Brazilian artist. This is Lella’s first major solo exhibition in Rio de Janeiro.
In association with CCJF the artist presents Parameters of Freedom, a challenging, yet emotive exhibition that questions independent and collective choice.
The Main Entrance showcases one of Lella’s most powerful works, Wheel of life, with its vivid colour and geometric form it is a reminder that existence is a collaborative cycle and continuum.
Gallery C1 is a celebration of Lella’s most recent sculptural works. Time Flies is a suggestion of freedom and hope but this too comes with constraints. A celestial bird on an upward flight is tied to the ground by an ascending spiral. It can fly; but only so far.
Other works in the collection such as Symbiosis deal with the fragility of the human condition and freeze frame/immortalize moments in time.
Gallery E1 houses the site-specific installation The Social Contract, a powerful installation that alludes to one’s sense of freedom. With its heavy chain structure it hangs impressively from the ceiling in two spirals. Inspired by the famous sentence of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, “Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains”, the artist suggests choice, captivity and constraints in the various weights and lengths of metal chain.
Gallery D1 houses the site-specific installation Do I really want to get up? a male and female nude appear to be peacefully reclining, but on close inspection are fused and locked in permanent position, mirrored walls also suggest ad infinitum – be it by choice, lethargy or conformity.
